About

After many years of teaching on-ground and online, I’ve experienced what works and what does not work for students. I want to share some of my insights in hopes of helping instructors and parents meet the needs of their students. Learning by Design will provide best practices for creating courses that build community, bolster engagement, and garner trust in an online environment.

On a More Personal Note

Late in my teaching career, I decided to earn my terminal degree and begin a new career as an instructional designer. It was not easy returning to school after a lifetime of being an instructor, but the decision to earn my EdD in my fifties is one that I will never regret. I know many adults consider the possibility of returning to school and probably have several legitimate excuses why the dream is just not feasible. I know I had many of the same excuses and many fears about entering the classroom again and then beginning a new career. To ease the fears and combat the excuses, I started writing about my experiences in hopes of encouraging others to take that first step. Since I graduated just a few years ago, my memories of those first few days in class and the years that follow are still fresh. I continue to add a little bit each week and will eventually make it public in hopes that others will gain new insight about returning to school and beginning a new career at any age.
